New Jeep concepts: blasts from the past along with future shocks

March 23, 2015 by Alastair Sloane

Jeep is celebrating its all-American heritage with seven concepts it will unveil at the annual Easter Safari, a week-long off-road extravaganza in Moab, Utah.

“We go to this event each year to showcase our latest Jeep production vehicles, as well as a variety of new ideas in our concept vehicles,” said Jeep president and CEO Mike Manley.

“In doing so, we receive a tremendous amount of valuable feedback, while interacting with our customers in the Jeep brand’s natural environment.”

The concepts feature a host of Mopar and Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) for owners who want to transform their standard models into hard-out off-roaders. Mopar is a contraction of ‘motor’ and ‘parts’ and is original equipment for Chrysler and Jeep vehicles.

The seven concepts include:

Staff Car – Built as a salute to legendary Jeep military service vehicles, the open-air Wrangler Ltd-based model (top) highlights rugged functionality with heritage design cues.  Its basic steel wheels, stretched canvas roof, bench seats, round headlights, rear-mounted spare tyre and vintage petrol can all echo the original military Jeeps. The Staff Car sits on 16-inch wheels with 35-inch Firestone NDT military tyres. It gets Fox shocks and Dana 44 axles.Under the bonnet is the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 mated to a six-speed manual.

Jeep® Chief ConceptJeep Chief – A tribute to the classic 1970s era full-size Jeep Cherokee, this Wrangler-based concept (above) evokes the surfer lifestyle. Exterior design cues include a vintage Ocean Blue exterior color scheme with a white roof; a modified razor grille that the original Wagoneer made famous; halogen headlamps; removable sides; chrome front and rear bumpers and classic, 17-inch slotted mag wheels. The Chief sports a selection of JPP add-ons including a 5cm lift kit with Fox shocks and front and rear Dana 44 axles with lockers, cold air intake and modified Rubicon rock rails. The Chief is powered by the Pentastar V6 mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Jeep® Wrangler Africa ConceptWrangler Africa – The ultimate Jeep(above)  for back-country and overland expeditions, with room for extra gear and auxiliary fuel tanks. It sports a high-clearance steel front bumper with winch, power step rock rails, power dome vented bonnet and an extended rear body and high-top roof. Powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine mated to an automatic transmission, the Wrangler Africa also features fender-mounted auxiliary fuel cans. The Africa sports 17-inch body colour steel wheels with 35-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires. It uses Fox shocks, sway bar links and Dana 44 axles.

Jeep® Grand Cherokee Overlander ConceptGrand Cherokee Overlander – The Grand Cherokee-based Overlander (above) represents the rough-and-tumble side of Grand Cherokee. Features include a one-off front fascia, integrated front winch, tow hooks, larger wheel flares, SRT tail-lamps and bonnet, off-road rock rails, front and rear skid plates and 18-inch milled wheels with BF Goodrich All-terrain T/A tyres. The powertrain is the 3.0-litre diesel V6 engine mated to the eight-speed Torqueflight transmission. To top it off, the Overlander has a spray-in truck bed coating on the roof and a two-person hard-shell rooftop tent.

Jeep® Wrangler Red Rock Responder ConceptWrangler Red Rock Responder – Designed as a support vehicle (above) it carries premium off-road equipment and spare parts and tools stored in the cargo box. It stands out on any trail, with LED headlamps and foglamps, LED A-pillar and off-road lamps. Add-ons include 37-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2 tyres, 10cm of JPP lift, Fox shocks, and front and rear Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gearing from JPP. Cargo boxes on each side of the vehicle hold a hi-lift jack and accessories, fire extinguisher, road side accessory kit, first aid kit, Snap-on tool soft bags and recovery kit. It also stores an air hose and accessories, a dual compressor and air reservoir. It gets the Pentastar V6 and auto box.

The Good Oil

French carmaker Renault has won the 2025 European Car of the Year award with the all-electric R5 supermini (pictured). It’s the brand’s second win in a row, following the new Scenic’s gong in 2024. The R5 led the vote count from start to finish from the 60 jurors in 23 countries. It received 353 points, beating the Kia EV3 (291 points) and the Citroen C3/e in third place with 215 points. It’s Renault’s eighth win in the 62-year history of the Coty award. The R5 goes on sale in the UK this month. There are two main drivetrains: a 90kW motor/40kWh battery model with a 300km range, and a 112kW/52kWh example with a 400km range. The R5 starts in price at £22.995, or $NZ50,000.

EU carmakers seek trade deal with Trump

BMW and Mercedes-Benz are among carmakers urging the European Union to get a favourable trade deal with US President Donald Trump. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) wants to keep open trade with both the US and China. It fears Trump, who promises heavy tariffs on Chinese imports to the US, will look unfavourably on countries that continue to trade freely with Beijing. Ola Kallenius, president of the group and chairman of the management board of MB, said in a letter to EU leaders:  “Overall, it is essential to recognise that trade with China and the US is most vital for the prosperity of the European economy. The EU should seek a grand bargain with the US and attempt to avoid a potential trade conflict.”

Diesel fuels EV concept for US military

A  go-anywhere EV concept for the US military uses an onboard 12kW diesel generator to top up the batteries on the move.  The all-wheel-drive has 800-volt technology and a 200kWh battery pack to power three electric motors, two in the rear and one up front. Claimed output is 745kW/15,590Nm, or 1000hp and 11,500 ft-lb of torque.  The four-seater was developed by the defence division of General Motors and is based on the platform of the Hummer SUV. It rides on Fox performance shock absorbers and 37-inch tyres and comes with “exceptional” approach and departure angles for off-road mobility. Maximum range using the generator to keep things ticking over is said to be around 500km.

We are the World

The outside temperature in Midland, Texas, was 40.5C when staff at the local office of the US National Weather Service set out to show the cabin of a closed car can literally get baking hot in summer. They mixed up a batch of chocolate chip cookies and laid them on the car’s dashboard – the surface of which showed a temperature of 87.7C. A little over four hours later the cookies were ready to eat. “Even though ours weren’t golden brown, we can confirm that they are done and delicious,” the staff wrote on Facebook.
