REC is a watch outfit that recycles bits of your favourite cars – Minis, Mustangs and the likes – and turns them into wrist-wear.
The name REC is both an abbreviation of the concept – “RECover – RECycle – REClaim” as well as a play on the pronunciation of the word “wreck”.
“It’s short and simple, much like our concept – and was the best we could come up with,” the REC people said.
The old car parts are mostly accommodated on the dials of the watches, and each comes with a guarantee as to authenticity, a nice touch.
“Not only are we prepared to guarantee the origin of your watch’s recycled material, we also provide a certificate of authenticity and original image of the recycled object’s logbook with every product,” said REC.
The number of watches made from a single car depends on both the state and size of the given car but REC says it can usually produce 400 to 800 watches from one vehicle.
Each is a limited edition in the sense that the parts used differ from watch to watch and the visual identity is a one-off because of their varying patina.
Available in a range of styles and with self-winding or quartz movements, REC prices range from $A399. The P51 Collection here, derived from a 1966 Mustang, is available online from $A2350, with REC launching through retailers soon.
