The Toyota Corolla continues to dominate sales of passenger cars in a new-vehicle market running 10 per cent up on last year.
Corolla had sold 2800 units to the end of July, averaging 400 a month against the second favourite Suzuki Swift’s 1888 sales, or 270 a month.
In third place was the Hyundai Santa Fe, with 1458 registrations, followed by the Toyota RAV4 (1438) and Holden Commodore (1395).
Commodore sales are hanging on against the trend towards SUVs, although SUVs held a ruling 27 per cent of July numbers and 28 per cent of the overall market for the first seven months of 2013.
July was another boomer month for new-vehicles. Passenger car numbers totalled 6769 units, the best July since 1987, and commercials recorded 2632 sales, the best July since 1984. Sales to rental companies totalled 542 units.
“With a strong New Zealand dollar and low inflation the real price of purchasing a new vehicle is better now that it has ever been,” said Motor Industry Association CEO David Crawford.
The best-selling vehicle for the year so far is the Toyota Hilux, thanks in part to the Christchurch rebuild. It had sold 2820 units to the end of July, 20 ahead of stablemate Corolla.
Commercial vehicle registrations are running 25.5 per cent ahead of the same seven-month period last year (17,386 against 13,857), and passenger vehicles are up 5 per cent (46,550 against 44,353).
Toyota remained the market leader in July with 18.1 per cent, made up of 1159 passenger cars and 544 commercials. Holden was second with 11.6 per cent (1088), closely followed by Ford on 11.2 per cent (1051).
Toyota heads the field for the first seven months of 2013 with a 19.6 per cent market share (12,495 registrations). Ford was second with 10.8 per cent (6921) followed by Holden with 10.1 per cent (6440).
Overall, new-vehicle sales at the end of July totalled 63,864 units against last year’s 58,034.
