The all-wheel-drive S60 Polestar Volvo concept unveiled last year had a boosted six-cylinder engine delivering 380kW and 575Nm of torque.
Volvo claimed a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.9 seconds. Christian Dahl, the CEO and founder of Polestar Performance, let it slip that a production version might actually arrive in showrooms.
But things changed. The production model did appear but as a mildly tuned S60 T6 R with 260kW on tap.
Things have changed again, now that Volvo and Polestar have entered the V8 Supercars series in 2014 with two S60 sedans running V8 engines.
The Swedes have an impressive motorsport history in this part of the world and join Ford, Holden, Mercedes-Benz AMG and Nissan in the V8 series.
Volvo will also produce a go-fast V60 estate version with Polestar, as this photograph (above) taken at the Nurburgring circuit shows.
