Ex-All Black coach Hart’s daughter is new Ford CEO

July 2, 2018 by Alastair Sloane

Former All Black coach John Hart’s daughter Kay (above) is the new president and chief executive officer of Ford Australia and New Zealand.

Hart, 40, replaces Graeme Whickman, who has resigned to become the managing director of Melbourne-based GUD Holdings, an automotive parts group with earnings in the 2017 calendar year of almost NZ$60 million.

GUD Holdings is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and valued at NZ$1.3 billion. Englishman Whickman’s resignation from Ford is effective immediately.

He will take up his new role on October 1. “I know I leave a much stronger Ford Australia and New Zealand than only a few years ago, a company that has a strong and vibrant future,” said Whickman.

Hart has for the past nine months been the US-based global chief of Ford’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) programme. Previously she was marketing manager for the Asia-Pacific region. Other executive posts with the carmaker include two years as managing director of Ford of Phillippines.

Both Whickman and Hart began their motoring industry careers with Ford NZ, Whickman as an operations manager in 1997 and Hart in the company’s marketing department in 1998.

Hart is Ford Australia’s first female president and CEO and will report to Ford Asia Pacific president and Ford Group vice-president Peter Fleet.

“I am excited to come back to Asia Pacific and work with such a strong and accomplished Ford Australia and New Zealand team,” Hart said in a statement.

“I’m looking forward to working with our dealers and team to continue the great progress that has been made in the consumer experience and helping accelerate growth across the business.”

Fleet praised Hart’s performance in previous roles. “Kay is a proven leader, highly motivated by consumer insights and dealer relations,” he said.

“She has broad experience across the company and around the globe. With strong knowledge and relationships in Australia and New Zealand, Kay will be a wonderful addition to our leadership team and a strong advocate for our customers and dealers.”

Fleet also praised Whickman (above) and his contribution to the Blue Oval. “Graeme has enjoyed an accomplished career at Ford. He has been instrumental in significant efforts around the globe including Canada, China and most recently, leading the transformation of Ford’s business in Australia and New Zealand. We thank Graeme and wish him and his family well,” said Fleet.

Hart takes the top job two months after Ford Australia was fined NZ$10.8 million by the Federal Court over the way it dealt with consumer complaints about its PowerShift transmission (PST).

The court found Ford had engaged in unconscionable conduct by blaming the fault of the transmission on the customer’s driving style.

The PowerShift transmission was fitted to Fiesta, Focus and EcoSport vehicles between May 1 2015 and February 29 2016.

A quality issue led to some owners experiencing excessive clutch shudder, noisiness, delayed acceleration and jerking when accelerating.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission reported that 37 per cent of vehicles fitted with a PST had at least one clutch replacement.

The court heard Ford had communicated with its dealers about the issues, but did not provide adequate information to the affected customers.

Former CEO Whickman said of the court’s decision that the carmaker accepted the fine and was committed to “making right” with affected customers.

“As we said from the outset of this action – we took too long to identify the issues and we acknowledge that PowerShift customers did not have complaints handled appropriately between May 2015 and February 2016,” said Whickman.

“We were overwhelmed with the volume of complaints and, while it was not intended, over a 10-month period our processes were inadequate and information provided was either inaccurate or incomplete. We let our customers down and for that we are sorry.”

Meanwhile, former Ford Australia product communications manager Neil McDonald will return to the company after a two-year stint at Honda Australia.

McDonald will return to the Ford PR team and will have responsibility for the Takata airbag inflator recall. He was previously with Ford for five-and-a-half years until he left in 2016 to join Honda.

The Good Oil

French carmaker Renault has won the 2025 European Car of the Year award with the all-electric R5 supermini (pictured). It’s the brand’s second win in a row, following the new Scenic’s gong in 2024. The R5 led the vote count from start to finish from the 60 jurors in 23 countries. It received 353 points, beating the Kia EV3 (291 points) and the Citroen C3/e in third place with 215 points. It’s Renault’s eighth win in the 62-year history of the Coty award. The R5 goes on sale in the UK this month. There are two main drivetrains: a 90kW motor/40kWh battery model with a 300km range, and a 112kW/52kWh example with a 400km range. The R5 starts in price at £22.995, or $NZ50,000.

EU carmakers seek trade deal with Trump

BMW and Mercedes-Benz are among carmakers urging the European Union to get a favourable trade deal with US President Donald Trump. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) wants to keep open trade with both the US and China. It fears Trump, who promises heavy tariffs on Chinese imports to the US, will look unfavourably on countries that continue to trade freely with Beijing. Ola Kallenius, president of the group and chairman of the management board of MB, said in a letter to EU leaders:  “Overall, it is essential to recognise that trade with China and the US is most vital for the prosperity of the European economy. The EU should seek a grand bargain with the US and attempt to avoid a potential trade conflict.”

Diesel fuels EV concept for US military

A  go-anywhere EV concept for the US military uses an onboard 12kW diesel generator to top up the batteries on the move.  The all-wheel-drive has 800-volt technology and a 200kWh battery pack to power three electric motors, two in the rear and one up front. Claimed output is 745kW/15,590Nm, or 1000hp and 11,500 ft-lb of torque.  The four-seater was developed by the defence division of General Motors and is based on the platform of the Hummer SUV. It rides on Fox performance shock absorbers and 37-inch tyres and comes with “exceptional” approach and departure angles for off-road mobility. Maximum range using the generator to keep things ticking over is said to be around 500km.

We are the World

The outside temperature in Midland, Texas, was 40.5C when staff at the local office of the US National Weather Service set out to show the cabin of a closed car can literally get baking hot in summer. They mixed up a batch of chocolate chip cookies and laid them on the car’s dashboard – the surface of which showed a temperature of 87.7C. A little over four hours later the cookies were ready to eat. “Even though ours weren’t golden brown, we can confirm that they are done and delicious,” the staff wrote on Facebook.
