The Camel Trophy began in 1980 with a crossing of the Trans-Amazonian highway and thereafter became identified with sponsor Land Rover. Until it ended in 1999, the so-called “Olympics of four-wheel drive” pitted man and machine against some of the most treacherous off-road conditions imaginable in many of the world’s most isolated regions. This is a history of the event.
