Land Rover has completed the final pre-production trial of its diesel-electric Range Rover – a near 17,000km journey through 13 countries. Three hybrid Range Rovers and support crew left Britain two months ago to tackle the 2000-year-old Silk Road trading route to Mumbai, India. Each vehicle was powered by a 250kW/690Nm 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged diesel engine coupled to a 35kW electric motor. Land Rover claimed average fuel consumption of around 8 litres/100km, or 36mpg, for a C02 rating of 169gr/km. The only hiccups were 15 punctures, four damaged wheels, and four cracked windscreens.
